ZIMBABWEANS went to the polls on March 29 2008 with a propitious cloud of change hanging over the country. Our interest was to tell, in pictures, the story of the Zimbabwe Election as it unfolded. To enable us to underatake this task, the Netherlands Institute of Southern Africa (NiZA) kindly gave us a grant. For this we are immensely grateful.

Using that grant a team of 3 journalists (two in Zimbabwe and one in South Africa) started capturing the images of the election as it unfolded. There have been further developments in Zimbabwe since the election and that has required us to look at other spheres of Zimbabwean life, for example, the arts. We recently published a dedicated issue of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA).

Our ultimate goal is to transform this blog into a full website that tells the story of Zimbabwean life in pictures, capturing political moments, sports moments, entertainment moments and so on. Where we are at the present moment is just but the first step out of the many miles we wish to travel. And we hope you will travel with us on this journey….

About the Project Co-ordinators

Chris Kabwato – Chris has been associated with Southern African film and video industry for a number of years. He was Head of Education & Public Affairs at the British Council in Harare from 1998 – 2000 before his appointment as Director of the Southern Africa Communications for Development (SACOD). SACOD is a network of 48 independent film producers spread over 11 southern African countries. Chris joined Highway Africa in October 2003 as Director. Highway Africa is a programme of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University (Grahamstown, South Africa). Highway Africa is a network of African journalists and exists to promote the use and understanding of ICTS and new media by journalists. E-mail: kumbirayi@gmail.com

Levi Kabwato – Levi is currently studying for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Media Management at the Sol Plaatje Institute for Leadership at Rhodes University. Before coming to Rhodes, he was the staff writer for Malawi’s Blantyre Newspapers Limited, publishers of The Daily Times, Malawi News and The Sunday Times.

Shalen Gajadhar – Shalen is a teacher in Communication Design at Rhodes University. He completed his Bachelor of Journalism at Rhodes in 2003. He is responsible for the design and layout of most of Highway Africa’s publications. Shalen also teaches design courses specifically structured for mid-career designers and layout artists. If he is not reading, he also freelances, with projects ranging from book layout to business cards.
